Households in Leitrim have seen some relief on heating oil bills, with new figures showing the county was among the cheapest places in Ireland for home heating oil in 2025.
According to the OilPrices.ie Heating Oil Report 2025, Leitrim recorded average prices ranging from €871.27 to €984.22 for 1,000 litres of kerosene across the year, with the lowest monthly average in May (€871.27) and the highest in February (€984.22).
The figures place Leitrim among the most affordable counties nationally for oil, with only Louth coming in cheaper overall. Louth recorded the lowest annual average price at €922.60 for 1,000 litres, followed by Leitrim and Sligo, while Kerry (€949.98) was the most expensive county, with Limerick and Cork also among the priciest.
The report found the difference between the cheapest and most expensive counties in 2025 was €27.37, a reminder that where you live can still make a noticeable difference when it comes to filling the tank.
Across the country, heating oil prices have continued to ease after the sharp surges seen in 2021 and 2022. OilPrices.ie said the price of 1,000 litres has fallen from €1,250 in 2022 to €936 in 2025, representing an overall drop of 25.12% over three years.
The report links the earlier price shocks to the economic disruption of the pandemic and the fallout from the war in Ukraine, but notes that the retail price has since moved into a steadier downward trend.
However, it also warns that while prices may continue to fall into 2026, international pressures — including the ongoing conflict and uncertainty around oil supply and output — could yet push costs back up later next year.
For now, the latest breakdown suggests Leitrim households have fared better than most in 2025, with the county continuing to rank near the bottom of the national table for heating oil costs.
