Cloone Easter fair returns with boxty, baking and crafts on Good Friday

Second annual event at Cloone Community Centre will feature boxty, Easter flowers, baking, crafts and outdoor food stalls

Cloone Easter fair returns with boxty, baking and crafts on Good Friday

Cloone Community Centre will host its second annual Easter Food and Craft Fair on Friday, April 3, with organisers hoping to once again draw a strong crowd for an evening of food, crafts and community on Good Friday.

The event follows on from a hugely successful first ever St Patrick’s Day parade in the village, which saw an unexpectedly large turnout.

“There were 79 floats in total turned out— far more than we expected” Michelle said. “It was a great day, and we plan to have another parade next year.”

Running from 6.30pm to 9.30pm, the craft fair is not being held as a fundraiser, but simply to give people something to do on what organiser Michelle Reynolds described as “a boring old day”.

“It’s not about raising money. It’s about having something on on Good Friday,” she said. “It is a boring day. It’s a horrible day. There was never anything to do on Good Friday when I was growing up around here. That’s why I organised it for that day.”

The fair, which takes place at Cloone Community Centre, will include a range of stalls selling local food, flowers, crafts and handmade goods. Among those attending are Leitrim Handmade Soap Company, bakers with homemade treats and boxed teas, stallholders selling candles and artwork, and the Drumsna Garden Centre, who will have Easter flowers for sale.

“There’s stalls varying from candles to art,” said Michelle. “It’s all crafts and food.”

Traditional Cloone boxty made by local people will also be on sale, adding a distinctly local flavour to the event.

A number of outdoor food vendors are also expected. Food  will be erved outside from the start of the event, while Pete’s Pizza is due to arrive later in the evening at around 8pm.

Michelle said she had originally hoped to have a fish and chip van at the fair because of the Good Friday tradition, but that vendor pulled out at the last minute. “I wanted this fish and chip guy there because it was Good Friday,” she said. “That was the whole idea.”

A raffle will also be held on the evening, and organisers are hoping people from Cloone and surrounding parishes will come along and support the event over the Easter weekend.

Admission is free and stall bookings can be made by contacting Michelle Reynolds on 086 063 8465.
