A great night’s entertainment is guaranteed at the St Catherine’s Church Restoration Dream Auction Fundraiser in The Standing Stone, Ballinamore on Tuesday, 9th August at 9pm.

Auctioneer Des Foley will be auctioning off all donated items on the night. This fundraiser is required to raise matching funds for grants that have been allocated towards the restoration of St Catherine’s Church, Fenagh.

St Catherine’s Church in Fenagh is an extremely important part of the rich heritage in this historical village in Leitrim. The church was built circa 1790 and was dedicated to St Catherine the legendary 4th century saint.

An alteration was made to the church in 1859-60 with a chancel and vestry been added to create extra space. The design was carried out by Architect Joseph Welland for the Pack-Beresford Family.

The church has a number of magnificent stained glass windows with the window in the chancel bearing a remarkable resemblance to the window in the east wall of the nearby abbey.

The church had not been used for Divine service since 1976 and in 1989 a local committee carried out extensive restoration works on the church.

In the last number of year’s issues have arisen with the floor, the roof and the stained glass windows. The Heritage Council awarded a grant to replace the floor in the church in 2015.

This enabled a Christmas Carol Service with the participation of the local national school children to take place. This was the first event to be held for 21 years in the church.

On Easter Sunday of this year there was an Easter Sunday Sunrise Service held.

The stained glass windows refurbishment has been addressed with a 50% grant from the Heritage Council of Ireland. This allowed the stained glass windows to be removed and to be expertly refurbished.

To everyone’s delight the newly repaired and restored stained glass windows expertly done by Abbey Stain Glass Windows in Dublin were refitted on Wednesday, 20th July.

These windows which date back to the 1800s were in place and ready for the Concert of Medieval Music which took place on Saturday, 30th July which was part of the Book of Fenagh 500 celebrations.

Grant aid has also been received for the roof repairs and also for the re-pointing works.

By having the Church restored, it will enable St Catherine’s Church to host events which will have appeal across the community and save a part of Fenagh rich heritage.

A committee has been formed to oversee the restoration of St Catherine’s Church, Fenagh. The committee has received some grant aid but matching funds are required.

The Dream Auction to be held in the Standing Stone, Ballinamore on Tuesday 9th August is part of this fundraising effort. The committee are looking for donations of items or services for the dream auction.
