The body of a man was recovered from the Shannon-Erne canal at Lock 16 just outside Leitrim Village last night, Sunday.
Although gardai have not released his name we understand he is a married man from the Drumboylan area who has been working for Waterways Ireland for a long number of years and was out checking the waterway when tragedy struck.
After failing to return home his wife alerted the gardai and a number of hours later the body was removed from the water.
Gardai and the fire service attended at the scene while the Health and Safety Authority are also examining the matter.
