As usual the good weather arrives in time for the Leaving Certificate Examinations!
874 students from around the county will start exams tomorrow morning, Wednesday, June 6.
446 students will sit their Leaving Cert exams in Ballinamore Community School, Carrick Community College, Drumshanbo Vocational School, Lough Allen College, Mohill Community College and St Clare's Comprehensive. This is broken down to 224 females and 222 males. Less than ten students will sit their Leaving Cert Applied.
428 students will sit their Junior Cert exams in the same centres in Leitrim.
All exams will be finished by June 23 with Leaving Cert results available on August 16 and Junior Cert results available in September.
According to the State Examination Commission a record 37% of Leaving Cert Students will take the high level maths papers this year. The CAO offers bonus points for those sitting the harder paper.
Our Leitrim sons and daughters will be part of 121,000 teenagers sitting exams this week. It is an anxious and stressful time for students and parents.
The main advice to get through the exams is:
- Sleep at least eight hours at night
-Eat well and avoid caffeine
-Create a study plan
-Find a quiet place
-De-stress (put down the phone)
According to National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals, “You won’t be productive if you study for twelve hours straight, locked away like a monk in a cell. Take regular breaks and reward your work by doing something that you enjoy. Listen to music, go for a walk, and talk to your friends and family.”
Regional Director of Samaritans, Cindy O’Shea said, “We would urge anyone involved in exams and supporting young people with their studies, to ensure students look after their emotional health. That way they are likely to cope better with the stress of exams, and achieve better too.”
Anyone who is feeling overwhelmed due to exam pressure, or who is worried about someone else, can contact the Samaritans for free from any phone on 116 123.
Or text 087 260 90 90 (standard text rates apply), email jo@samaritans.ie or visit www.samaritans.org.
