Sean MacDiarmada monument, Kiltyclogher
Calls from two councillors have been made for important heritage works on two local sites.
Drumkeerin Cllr Mary Bohan has called on the OPW to carry out repairs to the old church structure at Kilbride Cemetery, Corry, Drumkeerin.
She said the works need to be carried out “as soon as possible in the interest of health and safety.”
She explained that at this year’s Blessing of the Graves “people were asked not to stand in the church building at family graves in the interest of Health and Safety.”
Sinn Féin Cllr Padraig Fallon has asked Leitrim County Council for works to be carried out on the Sean MacDiarmada monument in Kiltyclogher, specifically that the monument be cleaned and the engraving enhanced.
He commended the amount of work the council did around the monument for the 1916 commemorations but he said the writing is now very hard to read and the area still get a lot of visitors to see Sean MacDiarmada's cottage and statue.
Leitrim County Council said they will inspect the monument and discuss works with the Heritage Officer.
