A GP will be appointed to the posting at Carrigallen, County Leitrim. A locum practitioner will serve the community until early May when a new GP is expected to commence in the village.
Fianna Fáil TD for Sligo-Leitrim Eamon Scanlon “It will come as a welcome relief to my constituents in Carrigallen, County Leitrim that a GP has been secured for the practice in the community. We are in a GP crisis west of the Shannon with many GP posts remaining vacant.
“The Irish Medical Organisation has said there is a threat that some GPs will not be replaced and that areas in rural Ireland, particularly west of the Shannon, will not be able to attract GPs.
“This week I joined the National Association of General Practitioners outside Leinster House to lend my support to their protest. They have not been listened to by the Govt. and continued to be ignored. The contracts provided to GP’s must be improved otherwise we risk continued decreasing numbers in GP services across rural Ireland,” concluded Deputy Scanlon.
