Cavan man endangered the lives of two gardai

A Co Cavan man has pleaded guilty to driving a vehicle into a garda patrol car and endangering the lives of two officers last year in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Joseph McGovern, 32, from Derrynaslieve, Ballyconnell, pleaded guilty to three offences which occurred in Carrick-on-Shannon on April 2, 2018.

Mr McGovern admitted driving into a garda patrol car and endangering the lives of Garda Claire O'Brien and Garda James Quigley and driving under intoxication at Keenehan, Carrick- on-Shannon as well as dangerous driving at Bridge Street on the same date.

Mr McGovern has previous convictions but his defence claimed that these offences were a “wake-up call” to him.

A probation report is to be prepared and the matter was adjourned to the next session of the Circuit Court in Carrick-on-Shannon.
