Parking shortage in Leitrim town sparks call for action

Main Street, Kinlough

Kinlough, one of Leitrim’s fastest-growing towns, faces a persistent shortage of parking, a concern highlighted by Cllr Justin Warnock.

Currently, the village has limited parking options, including a customer car park behind McGowan’s Spar, a one-way car park behind St Aidan’s Church primarily used for mass, and another further down the village at the community centre.

However, as the town’s population continues to grow, parking remains insufficient.

At a meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District, Cllr Justin Warnock urged the Roads department to explore solutions to alleviate the problem.

In response, the Roads department stated that no funding stream is available for new car parks.

Expressing disappointment, Cllr Warnock emphasised the necessity of parking for Kinlough’s various businesses. He also pointed out the village’s importance as a thoroughfare on the regional road.

“We can’t afford to take away any car park spaces but we need to make better value of what’s there and if there’s an area that can be looked at for car parking.

“It’s the fastest growing small town in Leitrim and we need to get up to speed with what’s needed,” he added.

The motion received unanimous support from all Manorhamilton MD members.
