Council to push Aurivo for meeting on traffic dangers at busy Leitrim store

Cllr Warnock asked that Manorhamilton MD contact the CEO of Aurivo to request an off-road loading and unloading facility for trucks servicing the Kinlough store, citing safety concerns with its location on the same busy road as the primary school.

Manorhamilton Municipal District is to seek a meeting with Aurivo to discuss road safety concerns at the Kinlough store.

This follows a proposal from Cllr Justin Warnock, building on a similar motion he brought forward in August, when he called on the CEO of Aurivo to provide an off-road loading and unloading facility for articulated trucks servicing the busy Kinlough store.

Cllr Warnock described the location as a “very dangerous area,” noting its proximity to Four Masters National School and the presence of a school bus route along the same road.

He highlighted that lorries often arrive early, before the Aurivo store opens, and park on the road.

“It’s a very, very busy store. I have it from local residents every day and it’s only an accident waiting to happen,” Cllr Warnock said.

A Council response to his original August motion confirmed that the MD would write to Aurivo requesting a meeting on road safety. The latest response stated that they would make contact again to pursue the same request.

Cllr James Gilmartin seconded the motion.

At the same meeting, Cllr Warnock also put forward another motion, asking that the MD acquire Derrynaseer Pier and the amenity area on the northern shore of Lough Melvin at Askill. He requested that funding be sought to develop a plan and carry out necessary works at the location.

His motion stated that the amenity is identified in the Social, Economic and Spatial Strategic Plan for Kinlough, Tullaghan, Askill and Glenade, and emphasised its role in the sustainable development of Lough Melvin as a facility for fishing, kayaking, and swimming.

Commenting on the growing popularity of the pier, he said, “There were over 100 cyclists at it recently for a fundraiser. It’s become a very popular route.”

In response, the Roads Department explained that issues relating to the “Title” of the pier and its surrounding lands must first be resolved. Only then could the Economic Development Department apply for funding under the Outdoor Recreational Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS).
