The South Leitrim firefighters took part in the event

Three firefighters from Ballinamore Fire Service took part in a five-day charity cycle from Boston to New York from September 6-10 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Karl Kavanagh, Dean Creaven and Ryan Gavin travelled to the United States to take part in the First Responder Ride for Resilience, joining firefighters, first responders, cancer survivors and supporters from Ireland, the United States and beyond.

The 343-mile route from Boston to Ground Zero represents the 343 FDNY firefighters who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks.

The event also raised awareness and support for firefighters and first responders affected by occupational cancer and mental health challenges arising from their service.

Funds raised through the cycle support organisations including Friends of Firefighters, Livestrong and the Boston Fire Cancer Foundation.

The event was held both as a tribute to those who lost their lives on 9/11 and to recognise the ongoing battles faced by many first responders.
