Sean McDermott BC's Dean Clancy is headed to the Olympics in Paris next year after the Leitrim club fighter produced a sueprlative display to overwhelm Italy's Gianluigi Malanga in the last eight of the 63.5kg category at the European Olympic Games in Poland on Wednesday.
Winning the bout on a 5-0 decision, the Sligo fighter won all but two rounds according to the five judges, winning the contest 30-27; 29-28; 30-27; 30-27; 29-28 to confirm a place in the quarter-finals and a bronze medal at the very least as well as his place in next year's Olympic Games in Paris.

Clancy, coached by his Manorhamilton native father Jason, dominated the centre of the ring throughout the three rounds. According to the judges, the Sean McDermott Club fighter won the first round 10-9 on four scorecards with one judge giving the Italian Malanga the verdict but Clancy showed his class in the second, winning 10-9 on all five scorecards.
That meant Clancy virtually had one foot in semi-finals and with the Italian attempting to force the pace in the third round, Dean kept out of trouble and even knocked the gumshield out of his opponent's mouth as the Italian was never able to use his longer reach to trouble the Irish champion.

The victory came in difficult circumstances for Dean as his grandfather passed away last Saturday and he dedicated the victory to his late grandfather.
"I want to dedicate that to my granddad. He passed away on Saturday and his funeral was today."
