Mohill Mavericks go for Lonleitros glory

Mohill’s Topline Community & Sports Hub will again be the centre of attention for the Lonleitros Basketball community next weekend when it hosts the Top 4 Finals with Mohill Mavericks Ladies going for glory,

Mohill Maverick ladies finished second place in the LonLeitRos leader leaderboard for the third year running but unlike previous year when Sligo All Stars topped the table, this time Castlebar’s Mayo Meteors took top spot as the All Stars placed in fourth position behind an ever improving Castlerea Cavaliers team.

The four teams will battle it out in this weekend's Top 4 final competition which will take place in Mohill’s Topline Community and Sports Hub. Longford Phoenix and Drumlish Dragons will compete in the Plate final.

Mohill will have to overcome Castlerea Cavaliers on Saturday at 3pm to earn their place in the final. This will no doubt be a closely contested match. Mohill will have to put in place a tight defence as the well coached Castlerea Cavaliers have a variety of plays making their offence very unpredictable.

Castlerea will be concerned with Mohill’s fast breaks as this has accounted for a large percentage of Mohill’s scoring in the league. Mohill have been dealt a heavy loss for the upcoming finals as they will be missing outside shooter Odharnait McGuinness.

Odharnait’s ability to score three pointers has always given Mohill the edge so Mohill will be hoping that their other outside shooters such as Jasmine Reynolds and Kate McGuinness will be on form. Caoimhe McGuinness has been outstanding for Mohill as usual this year despite a short break for minor surgery and she will be closely marked no doubt.

However, Aisling Leahy and Chloe Dolan’s strength and height under the boards, overall,  give Mohill a slight advantage and they would be slight favourites going into this weekend’s semi-final.

The other semi-final involving Mayo Mustang’s and Sligo All Stars on Friday evening promises to be a very entertaining encounter.

All Star’s have some notable changes this year with some of their more experienced players retiring. Mustang’s boast former international and US collegiate star Siobhán Kilkenny who was the driving force behind them topping the table.

For these reasons Mayo Mustang’s will be firm favourites in Friday’s semi final. So predictions for a Mohill Mavericks and Mayo Mustang’s final and an exciting finish to the season.
