The Annual General Meeting of the Leitrim Pool Association was held in the Pool Hall, Drumshanbo on September 25.

County Chairman John Casey welcomed the large number in attendance, stressing the huge contribution and input all had given and much appreciated. John spoke at length in praise of the Leitrim Juniors who won the All-Ireland held in Trabolgan,.

The winning team were Paul Christie, Drumkeeran, Keith Conlon, Stephen Gordon, Joe McGuire, Dromahair, Jamie Gaffney, Ballyfarnon, Dara O’Shea, Bawnboy and brothers David McWeeney and Kevin McWeeney, Captain.

Kevin McWeeney also won the U-21 and under 18 at the same event. Not bad for a 16 year old. John thanked the Seniors on a fine performance at the same event.

On the very successful tournaments during the year, Colin Crossan won the Shane Barry. The Special Needs Tournament went to Kevin McWeeney and High Kielty, the Leitrim Champion. The Tour Champ Ranking Events proved very successful with Colin Crossan winning events 1 and 4, Gavin Donnelly to take events 2 and 5 with Hugh Kielty winning event 2 and Niall Sweeney to win the Town Championship Champion.

On the Irish Pool Association Tournaments, Kevin McWeeney was Junior Champion at the first event in Kilkenny and U-21 champion in Drogheda. Daragh O’Shea, Junior finalist in Cork.

John praised the only Leitrim lady Maggie Brolly from Drumkeerin who reached the final in Athlone and succeeded as Ladies Champion to qualify for Ireland.

At the event in Bundoran, Maggie only played at the two events and John hoped that more ladies would take up the sport to form a Leitrim Ladies team.

At the European Championships, Leitrim was well represented by Joe McGuire and Kevin McWeeney on the Junior A team. In the U-21 team, Kieran McGuire, Maggie Brolly on the Irish Ladies team, Liam Shanley, Irish over 50 team and Eddie McGowan in the singles event of the Wheelchair.

At the world Championships held in Blackpool, Joe McGuire and Kevin McWeeny, Irish Junior Team with Liam Shanley on the Over-50s team and Jamie Gaffney playing in the singles event.

On the new pool hall, John thanked Bridie and Dermot McLoughlin for holding the pool tables and entertaining the players up to the time of opening.

Everyone enjoyed the Jimmy White exhibition according to the feedback and the official opening of the pool hall by Jimmy.

Concluding, John thanked all who contributed to the Association throughout the year. A special thanks to Brendan Shivnan, David Carthy and all who contributed to the Church Gate collections.

In his report, Gavin Donnelly, Secretary, hoped to introduce a system of how to qualify for the senior team. Senior spots will be given to winners of the Shane Barry and the Leitrim Champion. There will be three from the pub league, three from the Tour Championship and four picks from the County Manager.

Qualifying for the Juniors and Ladies will depend on the amount of players wishing to get involved with 8 players for Junior team and 5 players for the Ladies. If the number of players exceed the above trials will be held by their managers in the Drumshanbo Hall prior to the event.

Gavin told the meeting he was in advanced stages of completing the LPA website to be up and running in a few weeks. This should promote pool in Leitrim and all suggestions will be more than welcome.

Concluding, Gavin said that tour was a great success last year with a few small changes this year to improve and attract more players of all grades.

Treasurer Jeremiah Coulter gave a detailed report on the finances of the Association which proved very satisfactory. County delegate to the LPA Liam Shanley spoke on the achievements on his and the players involved for Leitrim through out the year.

County delegate Liam Shanley re-elected. Senior County Manager John Casey re-elected. Junior County Manager Colin Crossan re-elected with Liam Shanley & David Flynn Joint Ladies County Managers. On the disciplinary committee, Brendan Murray, John Casey, Jeremiah Coulter, Tommie Guckian, Jamie Gaffney and Kieran Maguire were elected.

County Pool League: will commence on October 25 & 26, with a choice of Thursday or Friday nights for each pub. If more than 12 teams are taking part, it will be put into two groups. All entries must be in by October 19, with full panel of players from each pub and contact numbers from each Captain on the team. This League is open to all pubs in the county with pubs in close prominity to the county also welcome. Contact 087-9593705.
