Counterfeit notes in Carrick

Gardai across the region are warning businesses and customers that counterfeit €50 notes may be in circulation.

Gardai across the region are warning businesses and customers that counterfeit €50 notes may be in circulation.

Gardai said there have been several attempts to pass counterfeit €50 notes to shops in the Carrick-on-Shannon and Boyle area for the past number of weeks.

While most shop staff have their own security checks in place, Gardai are advising all staff to be made aware of the threat and to thoroughly examine each €50 tendered.

According to gardai the notes appear to be of reasonable quality but under observation their features do not adhere.

Some basic security checks include: feeling for the “raised” print - the initials of the ECB, the value numerals and the motifs of windows and gateways will feel rough.

Check the watermark is visible in light and hologram figure shifts when tilted from side to side.
