Lough Erril
A “rotting” boardwalk at Lough Erril will be closed by Leitrim County Council due to safety concerns.
At a meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon municipal district, Cllr Des Guckian proposed a motion calling for the upgrading of facilities along Lough Erril, including an improved road access, seating and picnic tables. He also urged the Council, in conjunction with Inland Fisheries, to install a new boating pier and fishing stand.
Cllr Guckian said his motion came at the request of locals, and described the boardwalk as “practically rotten,” highlighting safety risks.
He warned that if someone were to be injured on the boardwalk, it would pose a significant issue for the Council. “I’d ask you to consider doing it right away in conjunction with Inland Fisheries and there should be no hesitation in doing so,” he said.
District engineer Darragh O’Boyle confirmed that the roadway will be resurfaced and picnic tables will be supplied as promised.
However, he explained that they lack both the budget and expertise to replace the pier.
“We will close the pier straight away and try to seek funding to repair it, at the moment it’s not in our budget,” he stated.
