The Organic Centre in Rossinver proudly presents its annual Potato Day on Sunday, March 2nd from 12pm to 4pm, with free entry to all.
Visitors can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of an onsite market of craft and food, where skilled artisans will demonstrate traditional crafts such as willow weaving and hand spinning. These demonstrations will showcase how raw fleece is transformed into woolen fabric, preserving the skills of past generations.
The Organic Centre will feature a series of potato themed talks and tours throughout the day. The lineup includes esteemed guests from The Loy Association of Ireland, who will be exhibiting the historic tradition of turning the sod for potato growing.
Visitors can also enjoy demonstrations and engage with the inspiring Paula Heatley from Paula’s family Kitchen as she shares her expertise on Boxty, the beloved potato dish from Leitrim and the Northwest.
Additionally, centre staff will lead discussions on potatoes and a range of related topics.
A highlight for growers is The Organic Centre’s extensive selection of seed potatoes, featuring one of the largest national varieties available.
Conveniently sized packs make it easy for families to start growing at home.
Visitors can explore the centre’s shops eco and book sections, alongside craft with gardening produce and equipment for sale.
For younger guests, a children’s natural craft workshop will provide hands-on fun.
Adding to the excitement, this year’s event will welcome some very special furry guests - alpacas from Leitrim-based 'BigOwen' Alpacas. Visitors will also have the chance to see how their fleece can be transformed into yarn.
Live music will add to the atmosphere, with a performance by guitarist Mike McLister. The Grass Roots Café at the centre will also be serving a potato-inspired menu.
“We are excited once again to be hosting our annual Potato Day and market. It's always a very popular day for growers and families, with a great buzz,” said Stephen Campbell, Manager of the Organic Centre.
“It marks the beginning of the warmer and longer days and it's always a great celebration of our humble spud.”
