Around €500,000 in funding has been announced for five community projects in Leitrim as part of the Community Recognition Fund launched in 2023 to improve infrastructure and facilities in communities that have hosted international protection seekers and Ukrainians.

The projects in Leitrim include: €176,590 for the refurbishment and conversion of the Garda Station in Dromahair into a community hub and men’s shed; €73,015 for a community bus for the Leitrim Volunteer Centre; €84,000 for the Lough Rynn Dragons Boating Club for a new shed and equipment; €77,400 for upgrades to Leitrim County Council and the Aura Leisure Centre; €85,054 for a walkway in Carrigallen Town.

Sligo-Leitrim TD Frank Feighan has welcomed the investment, saying it will deliver a diverse range of projects in the county.

“I am delighted to see such a variety of projects funded including a community bus, walkways, and development of our water leisure activities within Co Leitrim,” said Deputy Feighan.

The funding is part of a surge in investment that amounts to €14 million across 161 projects in communities around the country.

“Villages who have welcomed new arrivals, these communities will now enjoy upgrades to their sports facilities, community centres, recreational trails, community parks and play spaces,” said Dara Calleary TD, Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht.

“The closing date for the next phase of applications from local authorities has been extended to February 28th, and successful projects will be announced in the coming months.”
