Leitrim County Council defends existing awards as specific district awards sought

A debate arose at a meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District over the creation of awards exclusive to the Manorhamilton MD.

Cllr Justin Warnock proposed a motion seeking members' support for the development of a People of the Year Awards to recognise community groups, sport, artists and environmental champions within the district.

He argued that due to the district’s sparse population, many residents are too far removed from county-wide ceremonies held in places like Carrick-on-Shannon.

In response, officials stated, "Leitrim County Council currently recognise community groups, sport, artists and environmental champions within the County.”

The response highlighted events such as the Love Where You Live Awards, a joint initiative by Leitrim County Council and Leitrim Public Participation Network, which celebrates community spirit, volunteerism, achievements and environmental efforts.

This initiative includes a winner and runner-up prize for each category within each municipal district.

Expressing disappointment, Cllr Warnock suggested a more localised approach, proposing that if a group wins an award, councillors could visit their community centre as an MD to present it in a more personal manner.

Vincent Dwyer, Head of Finance, Water, Environment, Climate Action, and Emergency Services emphasised that the Council lacks the capacity to establish another awards programme.

He highlighted the specific management and organisation required for existing events like Love Where You Live Awards and the Leitrim Sports Star Awards.

Mr Dwyer stressed that the awards process is more complex than it appears, requiring clear criteria and proper judging procedures.

While acknowledging the issue is a matter for the broader Council, he concluded that the existing recognition across the county is sufficient.
