Leitrim County Council has received €2 million in funding for its Social Housing Second-Hand Acquisitions Programme.
The Government announced €436 million in funding today to address social housing needs. Of this, €325 million has been allocated to local authorities for the second-hand social housing acquisitions programme for 2025.
The 2025 second-hand acquisitions programme will facilitate the purchase of second-hand homes for Tenant-in-Situ Acquisitions, older persons and persons with a disability, exits from homeless services; and buy and renew acquisitions which tackle vacancy.
Additionally, €111 million has also been allocated for 82 new social housing projects, set to deliver over 1,300 newly built homes with a total development cost value of €517 million across 21 counties.
However, none of these projects will be in Leitrim, or Sligo.
News of this funding comes following the revelation on Friday, March 28 that Ireland’s homelessness figures reached a record high, again. Last month, homelessness figures surpassed 15,300 people including over 4,600 children.
In January, Cllr Pádraig Fallon sought an update on housing acquisitions, asking whether the local authority could acquire more housing.
The Council responded that it could not consider additional acquisitions under the programme until receiving confirmation from the Department of Housing.
Now that funding has been confirmed, progress on social housing acquisitions in Leitrim is expected.
Commenting on the funding, Sligo-Leitrim TD Frank Feighan said, “I am delighted to see the tenant in situ scheme well-funded also for 2025, which I am sure will provide opportunities for long term renters to stay in their home with the local authority as their landlord for the long term.”
