Leitrim train passengers urged to be cautious amid suspected measles case

Passengers who travelled on the Dublin Connolly to Sligo train line are being urged to take precautions after a suspected measles case was reported to the Department of Public Health, HSE West and North West.

The HSE issued an alert following concerns that travellers on the 5:05pm service from Dublin on Friday, March 28, may have been exposed to the virus.

The potential case was in Carriage D, and passengers who spent 15 minutes or more in this carriage may be at risk.

Measles symptoms can develop at any time within 21 days after exposure. The HSE is advising anyone who travelled on this carriage for 15 minutes or more to be particularly vigilant for signs of infection.

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can cause severe complications, particularly for pregnant women, children under one years old and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Measles presents cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing and a cough, sore red eyes, a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius or above, and a rash, which usually appears on head and neck first and spreads to the rest of the body.

The HSE advises that the best protection against measles is the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine.

Information on the vaccine can be found on here.

If you develop symptoms of measles, you should contact your GP immediately.
