Leitrim County Council will continue to seek funding for the widening of the road leading to Kiltoghert Community Centre, which was described during a Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District meeting as “the worst stretch of road in the county.”

Cllr Paddy Farrell expressed his “great disappointment” that the road is not eligible for widening under the Restoration Improvement Grant, despite previous work and assurances.

He urged the Council to pursue Specific Improvement Grants or Climate Adaptation Grants to facilitate road widening, and requested that the road be prioritised for tarring this year.

Cllr Cormac Flynn seconded the motion, stating, “It’s probably the worst stretch of road in the county, certainly in that area, it has gotten really bad.”

A response from the Roads department noted that while funding has been secured for resurfacing, it does not cover additional improvement works.

“We will continue to seek Specific Improvement Grants for this section. Regarding the programme, we can encourage the successful tenderer to complete the new surface as soon as possible within the agreed contract,” the response stated.

District engineer Emma Donohoe confirmed she would ensure it is among the first roads to be resurfaced.
