More than 500 learner drivers in Leitrim are facing long delays to sit their test, but that could soon change under a new action plan launched by the RSA this week.
The average waiting time for a driving test in Carrick-on-Shannon is currently around 17 weeks, with approximately five applicants failing to show up each month, according to QuoteDevil.ie.
Nationally, average waiting times are around 27 weeks, and the Government has tasked the RSA with reducing this figure to 10 weeks.
This response comes amid unprecedented demand, with 100,000 people waiting to be tested. In Leitrim, 513 applicants are currently on the waiting list.
The RSA plans to address the backlog through a series of special measures, including increased staffing, expanded testing hours (with overtime on evenings, Saturdays, and bank holidays), and increased testing capacity ahead of September.

Each month, the Carrick-on-Shannon test centre receives an average of 139.8 applications, with 89.2% of them scheduled within a month, according to QuoteDevil.ie.
Test centres across the country will see more testers assigned in the coming months, subject to local demand. Additionally, new driving test centres will open in key locations, bringing the national total to 60.
The number of driving tests conducted has steadily increased year-on-year, reflecting growing demand: 157,183 in 2021, rising to 180,696 in 2022, 212,525 in 2023, and reaching 253,850 last year, representing a 61% increase in the number of conducted tests since 2021. This marks a 61% increase in conducted tests nationally since 2021.
“We know how frustrating and disruptive these delays are — especially for people who need a licence for work, college, or caring responsibilities. I want to offer a sincere apology to everyone who has been affected,” said Sam Waide, Chief Executive Officer of the RSA.
He added: “Our team has developed a focused, projection-based plan to improve availability and reduce wait times.”
