'Opportunity to celebrate our county': Leitrim locals urged to join in Heritage Week

Leitrim ranks above the national average in events per capita, according to the Heritage Council, as locals are encouraged to register now

Leitrim people urged to join 'wonderful opportunity' at National Heritage Week

Communities across Leitrim are being encouraged to start planning their contributions to National Heritage Week 2025, as the official website for event registration is now live.

Organised by The Heritage Council, Heritage Week runs from August 16th to 24th and is Ireland’s largest celebration of heritage and is now in its 25th year.

The festival brings together thousands of communities, volunteers, and heritage enthusiasts from across the country, with over 2,000 events taking place annually and attracting close to 400,000 attendees.

Leitrim has consistently punched above its weight, hosting 33 events during last year’s celebration—well above the national average on a per capita basis, according to organisers.

Events in the county have ranged from guided nature walks and workshops to musical performances and heritage trails, highlighting the region’s rich cultural and environmental legacy.

This year’s theme, “Exploring Our Foundations,” invites organisers to reflect on the core elements of heritage—be it historic structures, landscapes, folklore, music, or traditional crafts. The aim is to celebrate what gives communities their unique identity and sense of place.

“What really makes National Heritage Week so special is the incredible energy and pride that local volunteers, community groups, and heritage champions bring to it every single year,” said Christopher O’Sullivan TD, Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, praising the dedication of local organisers. “These efforts are the heartbeat of the whole experience.”

Most Heritage Week events are free to attend, and organisers are now invited to submit their event plans at www.heritageweek.ie, where they’ll also find support materials for planning, promotion, and accessibility.

Locally, Leitrim County Council Heritage Officer, Sarah Malone, encouraged communities to take part: “Heritage Week in Leitrim provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our county’s unique landscapes, communities, and identity,” she said. “We’re excited to see the innovative events planned this year and encourage everyone to register their activities.”
