Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre appeals for information following reports of poisoned pets near Carrick-on-Shannon

Warning issued after cat dies from suspected poisoning in south Leitrim

Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre (LAWC) has issued a warning after a cat died of suspected poisoning in the Liscara area, near Carrick-on-Shannon.

LAWC, which is based in Drumkeeran, received recent reports of cats showing signs that they were poisoned but have not been seen since.

One cat, a tabby-and-white, was found and brought to the vet but passed away within hours according to the LAWC’s Facebook post.

“Poisoning is not a quick or peaceful death. It is a slow, agonising and terrifying — burning the throat and stomach, causing violent convulsions and unbearable pain until the body finally shuts down.”

“No living creature deserves to suffer like this.”

Laying out poison for animals is generally illegal under Irish law. The organisation is appealing for any information about suspicious activity or the source of this poison to come forward.

They added: “This tragedy is also a stark reminder: spay and neuter your pets. Cats left to breed freely create generations of vulnerable animals who often struggle to survive, sometimes in hostile environments where not everyone sees their value. You may love animals, but sadly not everyone around them does.  By neutering/spaying, you can break the cycle of suffering and protect countless innocent lives from ending this way.”
