Leitrim Glens Sportive on Facebook
Calls have been made for Leitrim County Council to collaborate with the Leitrim Glens Cycling Club to help them market and expand their annual Leitrim Glens Sportive, a popular cycling event that has attracted cyclists from across the country to ride through the Glens of Leitrim for charity for almost 10 years.
This year’s event took place in August and offered four route options: a 40km route, a 100km route, a 200km route, and a 250km route.
Cllr Eddie Mitchell requested that the Council meet with the cycling group, as they are considering extending the cycle route further into the North of Ireland.
“They’re not seeing the numbers they should be seeing and need help with marketing. They want to extend the route into Northern Ireland and attract some funding cross-border,” Cllr Mitchell said.

His motion received full support from all councillors present. Cllr Gilmartin commented, “From a tourism point of view it’s a wonderful event and I think there’s not too many around the country that are of a similar comparison. They’re a very small group and do wonderful work.”
A response confirmed that the Tourism Officer is happy to meet with representatives of the Leitrim Glens Cycling Club to discuss their proposal.
It also noted that they have previously collaborated on a number of initiatives and are happy to continue this partnership into the future.
