Derogation sought to fast-track repairs on Leitrim road caused by storm damage

A local road near Dromahair is unlikely to reopen before next year, a meeting of the Manorhamilton Municipal District has heard.

The L-42751-0 road at Cloonbannive, Dromahair, was closed in October to carry out rectification works after it sustained damage from Storm Amy.

At November’s meeting of the Manorhamilton MD, Cllr Pádraig Fallon sought an estimated timeline for the road’s reopening, noting that it is used frequently by walkers and farmers.

Paul McMahon, Senior Engineer, explained that instream works are required on an adjacent river that caused erosion to the road, and these works must be completed before the road can reopen.

He said the permitted season for instream works runs from May to September, but the Council is currently applying for a derogation to carry out the repairs sooner as emergency works.

They are in the process of agreeing the methodology with Inland Fisheries Ireland and are awaiting approval.

Cllr Fallon also asked when works would take place on the bridge on the L2126 at Rassaun West/Leckanarainey.

An application has been submitted for funding for these bridge works in 2026, and it was noted that significant works will be required.
