'EU must be ready to ban Grok over AI sex-images' - MEP for Leitrim

Nina Carberry, who is the MEP for the Midlands-Northwest, including Leitrim, has called on the European Commission to suspend Grok across the EU if the platform continues to host “horrific” AI-generated sexualised images of adults and children.

Speaking from Brussels today MEP Carberry said: “We’ve heard plenty of expressions of concern and multiple warnings from the European Commission and from Coimisiún na Meán in recent days, but what we need now is decisive action. Under Article 70 of the Digital Services Act, Europe can suspend platforms like Grok when they breach EU law. We take cars off the road when they fail the NCT. If someone is caught drunk driving, they are disqualified. We should treat online platforms the same way when they fail to remove child sexual abuse material.”

“I have written to the Commission to ask why the EU is not currently using all the weapons in its arsenal, and I have written to Coimisiún na Meán seeking an update and a meeting.”

Carberry added: “The EU’s most recent case against X dragged on for nearly two years before resulting in a €120 million fine. The current drawn-out process is far too slow. This level of delay is unacceptable.

“Enforcement is taking far too long. The Commission urgently needs to move beyond warnings and fines. A platform that repeatedly flouts EU law should not be allowed to operate in the European Union.”
