A call has been made for increased awareness of the Salt Bin Purchasing Scheme, which enables businesses and communities to purchase a salt bin and salt from the Council for use in estates and premises during periods of cold and freezing weather.
The matter was raised at a meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District, where Cllr Eddie Mitchell asked the Council to carry out additional awareness-raising around the Salt Bin Purchasing Scheme.
The scheme allows residents’ associations and businesses to purchase a salt bin and salt from the Council for housing estates or business premises.
“There is an opportunity now to get more bins established and help people to help themselves and their neighbours,” his motion stated.
Cllr Mitchell also acknowledged the work undertaken by the Council during freezing weather, particularly in relation to footpaths, given the level of resources available to them.

The Salt Bin Purchasing Scheme is open during the winter period to Local Community Groups, Businesses, Schools, Churches, Residents’ Associations and the General Public.
Two options are available when purchasing a bin. The first option includes delivery of a salt bin along with one fill of salt at a cost of €170, while the second option provides delivery of a salt bin only for €120.
Once the initial fill has been used, it is the responsibility of the relevant community group, school or business to source their own salt.

A response from the Roads department confirmed, “Leitrim County Council can provide salt bins to communities, schools, churches, etc., for a nominal fee. This scheme has been in place for a number of years.”
