Leitrim Credit Union issues warning after scam text circulates

A Leitrim credit union has issued an alert to customers after a scam text began circulating among credit union members.

Manorhamilton Credit Union posted on Facebook to warn members about a scam text that had been reported to a credit union in Ireland.

The scam text message read, “Credit Union: 3 failed login attempts. Please reset your password.” The message was followed by a fake contact support number and reference number.

“A credit union member received a text message claiming to be from their credit union, stating that there had been failed login attempts on their account and instructing them to reset their password by clicking on or contacting a mobile number included in the text,” wrote a statement on their Facebook page.

Manorhamilton Credit Union advised members on what to look out for as online and text scams continue to increase and become easier to fall for.

They advised that credit unions will never ask members to reset passwords or verify details via SMS links or mobile numbers; members should not click on links, reply to messages, or call numbers included in unsolicited texts; members should contact their credit union directly using official contact details if they have concerns; and suspicious messages should be deleted and reported to the credit union immediately.
