Water main replacement works have commenced in South Leitrim on the Fenagh to Ardrum line, aiming to provide homes and businesses with a more reliable and sustainable water supply while addressing the issue of frequent bursts.
The works on the R202 form part of the National Leakage Reduction Programme, with almost 2.85km of ageing and damaged water mains set to be replaced with new, modern piping.
Local councillor Gary Prior has welcomed the commencement of the works, describing it as “real progress,” and noted that further works in the area are due to commence later this year.
“It’s very positive to see machinery on the ground, and I’ll continue to monitor progress closely as works advance,” said Cllr Prior.

“I’m also pleased to share an update on the Keshcarrigan to Fenagh section. I’ve been advised that problematic mains have now been scoped for replacement and are at design stage, with construction planned to progress later this year.
“Once completed, this will allow pumps to be switched on from Keshcarrigan, which is a key step in improving overall supply and reliability for the wider area.
“This is real progress, and I’ll continue to keep pressure on to ensure delivery,” he concluded.
Uisce Éireann has stated that its long-term goal is to reduce leakage to 20 percent and that more than €1 billion will be invested in the network up to the end of 2029, including measures aimed at reducing leakage.
