A new Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) class will open in Lough Allen College in Drumkeerin in the 2026/2027 year.
The announcement was made by the Department of Education and Youth on Wednesday evening.
Lough Allen was one of 40 schools which received new special needs classrooms, according to the announcement.
The development, which will accommodate around six students, has been hailed as a significant and positive step forward for students and families in the Drumkeerin area and across North Leitrim.
“This is an important investment in our local education infrastructure and, most importantly, in the young people and families who need these vital supports,” said Leitrim councillor James Gilmartin.
Parents of students with additional needs are often faced with difficulties finding places in schools which have the facilities to meet their children's needs.
“The expansion of special education provision is essential to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow and reach their full potential within their own community. For many families, access to appropriate supports locally can make a world of difference.”
The news comes weeks after a number of Autism Spectrum Disorder schools were sanctioned in Leitrim, including special classes in Scoil Mhuire National School, Bornacoola, Drumlease National School, Gaelscoil Liatroma in Carrick-on-Shannon, and Carrick-on-Shannon Community School.

“The introduction of new classes, including inclusive models, reflects a more forward-thinking and flexible approach. It is encouraging to see a focus on ensuring that children can attend their local schools, alongside their friends and siblings.”
The sanctioning of a class does not mean that it will be provided, and funding still needs to be secured after a formal sanction is received.
The development at Lough Allen Vocational School, based in Drumkeerin, has been welcomed by local Fine Gael TD and Minister of State, Frank Feighan.
“I am delighted to see Lough Allen College included in this round of allocations. I wish to congratulate the principal and the Board of Management for their work on the application," said Minister Feighan.
