Joe Mooney Summer School well underway in Drumshanbo as festival continues

Drumshanbo is once again welcoming musicians, dancers and visitors as the 36th annual Joe Mooney Summer School gets underway.

Running from July 18 to July 25, the summer school honours the memory of Joe Mooney, who is remembered for his contribution to preserving Leitrim's traditional music and culture.

The official opening took place in the Mayflower Hall and was performed by singer and tutor Fionnuala Maxwell.

A concert followed on Sunday, July 19, in the Community Centre, featuring the band Tempest, whose members have roots in Ulster.

Throughout the week, classes in traditional music, singing and dance are taking place, including tuition in fiddle, flute and sean-nós dancing.

Away from the formal programme, traditional music sessions are also taking place in venues throughout the town, with musicians gathering to play tunes, songs and share stories in informal settings.

Alongside the classes, the programme includes activities for younger participants as well as visitors attending the Drumshanbo festival.

Events continue throughout the week, including the Grand Traditional Concert on July 23, together with nightly céilithe and cultural talks, before the summer school concludes on July 25.
