The Green Party extends its gratitude to every citizen who participated last Friday’s referendums, regardless of their vote.

Despite the outcome, the party remains committed to advocating for progressive policies that benefit all members of society.

Bláithín Gallagher, Chair of the North West Greens and Green Party candidate for the Manorhamilton Local electoral area, said, “Friday's referendum results serve as a sobering reminder of the importance of strategic outreach and effective communication with the electorate.

“While there were concerted efforts to advance progressive causes, it's evident that our campaign fell short in addressing key concerns and clarifying the proposed amendments.

“We must acknowledge the factors at play, including a well-organised opposition campaign and complexities in the referendum wordings.

“However, it's imperative that we also recognise our own shortcomings in engaging with voters and fostering clarity around our proposals.

“Moving forward, we have a duty to reflect on these lessons and ensure that we work towards an inclusive, responsive society that is proactive in addressing the needs of all communities.

“We must harness the learning from this result and redouble our efforts to build a more equitable and compassionate society.”

Reflecting on the results, Equality Minister Roderic O’Gorman expressed disappointment but emphasised the importance of respecting the electorate's decision.

He stated, “When the Government puts forward a proposal for constitutional change, it is up to the Government to make the case for that change. In this campaign, Government was unsuccessful in doing that. We accept the decision of the electorate on this issue.”

Campaign director Pauline O’Reilly commended the diverse voices that contributed to the debate, highlighting the complexity of the campaign. She affirmed, "Government has heard voices from all sides and will now take the next steps to strengthen support for carers and those who are cared for.”
Leader of the Green Party, Eamon Ryan TD, expressed gratitude to voters, acknowledging that democracy doesn't always yield the desired outcome.

He reassured the public, saying, "While the Constitution remains unchanged, this Government will continue to work to improve the lives of carers and those who are cared for.”

The Green Party reaffirms its dedication to advocating for the rights and well-being of caregivers and families, emphasising the importance of ongoing support and collaboration across all political spectrums.
