N16 towards Manorhamilton
A request for traffic calming measures at the entrance to Manorhamilton on the N16 from the Sligo side was raised during a meeting of Manorhamilton municipal district.
Independent councillor James Gilmartin proposed the motion citing the location as a serious concern.
Cllr Gilmartin expressed concern about the potential for an accident at the location, noting that the issue has been brought to his attention on numerous occasions.
Cllr Felim Gurn and Cllr Pádraig Fallon supported the motion.
A response from the Roads department stated that the approach to Manorhamilton is a legacy road with 80km/h speed limit.
There are four sets of gateway signs informing drivers of speed limits and road conditions. The signs indicate road narrowing, no overtaking, 60km/h speed limit ahead at 150 metres and 50km/h speed limit ahead.
Additionally, an alternative road surface cover adjacent to the 50km/h sign emphasises the change in speed limit.
Leitrim County Council also completed a speed survey at the location between January 13 to January 20. If the survey reveals that vehicles are exceeding the posted speed limit, the Council will request Gardaí police traffic speeds.
Cllr Fallon requested that data from the speed survey be shared with councillors once completed, suggesting it might identify a solution. This request was agreed on.
