The need for a footpath extending from the N16 to the Elastometall factory in Manorhamilton will be assessed as part as funding from Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

Leitrim County Council has received a Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) Active Travel allocation for the N16 in Manorhamilton. This funding will support the evaluation of missing pedestrian links along the N16.

As part of the initiative, the need for a footpath extending from the N16 to the Elastometall factory will be assessed.

Cllr Felim Gurn recently proposed a motion at a meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District, calling for the provision of a footpath at this location, describing the situation as an “ongoing problem.”

“In the current climate where we are asking people to walk and cycle more to work this footpath would be a huge benefit,” his motion stated.

The motion received unanimous support from councillors.

Cllr Gurn also urged that funding be sought for the installation of rumble strips to slow down traffic exiting the Mace petrol station.

A response from the Roads department noted that the stretch of road from just beyond the Elastometall factory to the petrol station features four sets of substantial gateway signs. These signs alert drivers to upcoming road conditions, including: road narrows ahead, no overtaking, a 60 km/hr speed limit ahead in 150m and a 50 km/hr speed limit ahead at the petrol station.

Additionally, under the N16 Speed Limit Review, there is a proposal to extend the 60km/h speed limit further along the Sligo Road, which is expected to help reduce speed of traffic in the area.

“The issue of excessive speed is a matter for An Garda Síochána, Leitrim County Council will ask the Gardaí to monitor the speeds at this location,” the reply concluded.
