A report from a visually impaired resident of North Leitrim has highlighted significant accessibility challenges for people with visual impairments navigating Manorhamilton

At a meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District, Cllr Eddie Mitchell informed members that he had been contacted by the resident, who provided a short report outlining the difficulties they encounter when moving around the town.

The resident, who uses a trained guide dog, noted that the dog’s training does not always prevent them from inadvertently walking into traffic in certain parts of Manorhamilton, with Market Square being a notable concern.

“They outline how their guide dog’s training doesn’t prevent them from walking into traffic and how that’s related to simple things that may be resolved with some tactile paving. I ask that Leitrim County Council review this short report and consider its recommendations as they plan further works around the town,” stated Cllr Mitchell’s motion.

Senior engineer with Manorhamilton MD, Paul McMahon, confirmed that the report is being reviewed, describing it as valuable feedback. “We’ll look at what we can put in place to rectify that individual situation,” he said.

An official response also indicated that the report will be forwarded to the Town Team for consideration as part of future efforts to improve accessibility and mobility.

Accessibility and walkability reviews are scheduled to take place across Leitrim next year, including in Dromahair and Carrigallen, while Carrick-on-Shannon and Mohill are currently under consideration.

The most recent walkability audit in Manorhamilton was carried out in 2024.
