Scaffolding on the former Gannon's drapery in Mohill.
The scaffolding on the former Gannon’s drapery shop, which partially collapsed onto Main Street in Mohill in November of 2023, will remain in place until at least the end of this year, Carrick-on-Shannon municipal district has heard.
Cllr Maeve Reynolds asked what progress has been made with the owners in relation to the building.
“The people of Mohill would like to see the scaffolding removed but I know in order for this to happen it has to be safe,” she said.
Cllr Reynolds’ motion was seconded by Cllr Stenson and Cllr McGowan.
The scaffolding has already been in place for over a year.
A reply by Economic Development explained that the scaffolding at the premises is essential to prevent further collapse, protect adjoining properties and to ensure public safety.
The repairs needed to restore the building require planning permission for the reinstatement of the building, as the unintended collapse is considered an unauthorised demolition.
Surveys of the building have been completed and the planning application is being finalised, and is expected to be lodged soon.
Reconstruction will be closely monitored by the Building Control Authority, however, compliance with regulations is in the responsibility of the owner, designer and builder.
Due to the timelines for planning and reconstruction, it is likely the scaffolding will be in place until at least the end of this year to ensure public safety.
Cllr Reynolds welcomed the response and emphasised the importance of maintaining consistent communication between the planning department and Mohill residents.
