Near miss highlights danger of unmarked one-way street in Leitrim town

Castle Street, Mohill

A near-miss accident occurred due to drivers unfamiliar with the area travelling the wrong way on a one-way street in Mohill, a meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District was told.

Cllr Irene Guckian-Rabbitte called on Leitrim County Council to install signage in Mohill to indicate that drivers cannot turn left from Lower Main Street or turn right from the Carrigallen side onto Castle Street, opposite St Mary’s Church of Ireland, as it is the exit for a one-way traffic system.

She said several locals have raised concerns about motorists turning where they shouldn’t, with some “horrified to see it.”

“There’s people coming into the town that are not familiar with it and they don’t realise they can’t turn up,” said Cllr Guckian-Rabbitte.

Her motion was seconded by Cllr Maeve Reynolds, who told the meeting that a very near miss had recently occurred.

“There’s nothing at all to notify motorists that you can’t turn up from either side of the road,” she said, emphasising the need for an immediate temporary sign.

In response, the Roads Department confirmed that signage will be installed as part of the ongoing public realm works, along with additional road markings.
