Dangerous junctions and a lack of signage on a local road in south Leitrim were discussed at November’s meeting of the Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District, with all members unanimously supporting the motion.
Cllr Irene Guckian-Rabbitte raised concerns about the local road L-1571 from Mohill to Gortletteragh Church, requesting that the Council consider additional road safety signage “for proper, and safer, access and egress along that road.”
Cllr Guckian-Rabbitte highlighted several problematic junctions along the route, including at Moffatt’s Cross, where she said traffic coming up from Cornageeha cannot see onto the main road.
“They’re out halfway or beyond and there’s been several near misses. There’s quite a few junctions along that road that are quite risky,” she said.

She also noted that while locals quickly become familiar with the roads, difficulties arise for those unfamiliar with the area who rely on satnavs.
“If you’re not familiar with the road there is a lot to look out for,” she added.
All councillors of Carrick MD supported her motion.
District Engineer Emma Donohoe confirmed that existing signage and road markings will be assessed and replaced or repaired where necessary.

She added that improving the junctions would require an application to the Low Cost Safety Scheme, which is used by local authorities for minor but high-impact safety improvements on roads.
