Man arrested after builders subjected to abuse by protesters

A man has been arrested in connection with an incident in Co Wicklow in which builders were verbally abused by protesters.

The man, in his 30s, was arrested on Thursday morning and is being detained at a garda station.

On Monday evening, gardai responded to reports of a large group of protesters gathered outside vacant premises undergoing work in Aughrim.

Workers contracted to carry out lawful business at the site were allegedly subjected to abuse by individuals present.

Gardai attending the scene were also subjected to abuse.

The Department of Integration has since confirmed that the building has not been earmarked for use by international protection applicants.

Footage shared on social media shows builders being subjected to abuse and threats by a group gathered at the site.

In a statement, gardai said they are aware of online misinformation, disinformation and fake news in relation to the incident.
