Gardai say the two-car collision occurred on the outskirts of Dundalk shortly after 1:45pm this Wednesday

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision that occurred on the outskirts of Dundalk.

In an appeal, issued this Wednesday evening, they say the two-car collision happened at Bellews Bridge Road, Castletown, shortly after 1:45pm.

"The driver of one car, a woman aged in her 60s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. She was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Her body has been removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda where a post mortem will take place.

"The driver and sole occupant of the other car, a female in her 30s, is being treated at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for serious but non-life-threatening injuries," said a garda spokesperson.

Gardai say a technical examination of the scene is being carried out by Forensic Collision Investigators and motorists are being advised the road remains closed at this time. 
 
Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to come forward.

"Road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam footage and who were travelling in the area between 1:30pm and 2pm (on Wednesday) are asked to make this available to investigating gardaí," said a spokesperson.
