Leitrim councillor warns patients left in pain as ongoing roof leaks halt surgeries in Sligo

Ongoing roof leaks at Sligo University Hospital have again halted orthopaedic surgeries, prompting concern over patient welfare and facility standards.

Leitrim councillor warns patients left in pain as ongoing roof leaks halt surgeries in Sligo

Orthopaedic consultants at Sligo University Hospital spoke to RTÉ News earlier this year about the conditions under which they were forced to operate due to a leak in the roof.

The orthopaedic unit has experienced persistent roof leaks for several years.

Repair works have been ongoing for a few months, with final completion scheduled for this week. However, the theatre was forced to close again at the start of October after rain once again came though the roof during Storm Amy.

The theatre is expected to reopen next week, six weeks after the most recent leak. At November’s meeting of Leitrim County Council, Cllr James Gilmartin called for the Minister for Health to be contacted to express “serious concern” regarding the repeated and intermittent closure of orthopaedic surgical services at the hospital.

“Patients are left in severe pain with no clear timeline or communication. While acknowledging the excellent work of hospital staff under difficult conditions, this Council urges the Minister to prioritise the development of robust contingency plans for urgent surgeries and to ensure that hospital facilities are upgraded to acceptable standards to prevent such disruptions in the future,” Cllr Gilmartin’s motion stated.

His motion was unanimously supported by all elected members of Leitrim County Council.
