David & Goliath Vistamed Junior A Final battle as Glenfarne Kiltyclogher face St Mary's Kiltoghert

David & Goliath Vistamed Junior A Final battle as Glenfarne Kiltyclogher face St Mary's Kiltoghert

The GAA world is full of David & Goliath battles but is there a more perfect example than this Saturday's Vistamed Junior A FC Final when Glenfarne Kiltyclogher take on St Mary's Kiltoghert in Drumkeerin at 4 pm.

Anyone with a passing knowledge of Leitrim football will know who is who in this conversation but interestingly, they both share a statistic of losing their last appearances in the Junior decider, St Mary's losing to a controversial goal in the dying minutes last year and Mohill over-running Glenfarne Kiltyclogher the year before.

In the grand scheme of things, the Junior A crown is nowhere near the main target for St Mary's but the Carrick men are producing quality young footballers in their droves and a team playing in the Intermediate grade next year would be a perfect proving ground for the next generation of players to impress their senior team.

Fans were out in force in Avant Money Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada for Sunday's Connacht Gold Leitrim SFC Final with Mohill regaining the title as they triumphed 2-10 to 0-14 against defending champions St Mary's Kiltoghert. Observer photographer Willie Donnellan captured a lot of fan shots from before and during the game .... see who you can spot!

It is a luxury Glenfarne Kiltyclogher simply don't have - the Junior A grade is their All-Ireland and reaching two finals in three seasons with their small numbers ranks right up there with Mohill reaching four back to back finals at senior level - that's quite a claim but it is a scale of the challenges facing the north Leitrim men.

Normally, a first string team would start as heavy favourites but St Mary's performance last year and a stronger pick this year makes the Carrick men the favourites and they're probably happy to embrace that. They topped their group with ease and came through a stern test from Annaduff's second string in the semi-finals.

The only fly in the ointment is who they might lose to their Senior team with the few minutes Emmet Regan got in the Senior semi-final robbing them of a very effective player at Junior level.

For Glenfarne Kilty, Fergal Clancy remains an inspirational figure but the scoring burden has probably passed on to Patrick Gilgunn and Diarmuid Clancy. Much of their team of two years ago returns so they have experience and the occasion won't phase them.

They lost to Cloone in the group stages but have been scoring well and they gained a large slice of revenge when seeing off the Cloone men in the semi-final, demonstrating a lot of resolve under fierce pressure in the closing stages.

The two sides haven't met in this year's competition but both did play Gortletteragh, St Mary's beating them 7-11 to 1-2 in the first game while Glenfarne put 4-16 past them while conceding 1-9 so make of that what you will.

The romantic in me would love to see Glenfarne Kiltyclogher win but I think the odds are against them in this one. St Mary's are determined to go one step further than last year and they look to have the strength and scoring power to do just that.
