Clancy edges Glenfarne Kiltyclogher past Cloone

Former Leitrim star Fergal Clancy scored an injury winner to send Glenfarne Kiltyclogher back to the Vistamed Junior A Championship Final for the second time in three years after they edged past Cloone in a hard fought  showdown last Sunday in Ballinaglera.

With the pitch at St Hugh’s Park in excellent condition, a more clinical Glenfarne  withstood a late Cloone rally that saw sub Darren Keegan grab a goal less than three minutes to but Clancy hit back, scoring the match winning point to break Cloone hearts.

Cloone was the sharper side in the opening exchanges with their hard running forcing Glenfarne  to concede frees. Eoin Keegan hit two frees inside the opening three minutes  and Conor Keegan tapped over a ninth minute free to leave them three points clear.

Glenfarne Kilty eventually got on the scoreboard when Patrick Gilgunn converted a free, quickly followed by Pat Sweeney's point, the first from play, midway through the first half. Gilgunn added a second to tie the scores before Eoin Keegan tapped over a free to put Cloone back in front after 17 minutes. But Glenfarne were now moving well with Diarmuid Clancy firing over after a good move.

Clancy put Glenfarne Kilty ahead for the first time when shot over for his second point on the 20 minute mark. The nip and tuck nature of the exchanges continued with Cloone's Conor Keegan whipping over a placed ball two minutes later to level matters for a third time.

After that Glenfarne Kilty finished stronger in the opening half, Gilgunn firing over to leave them 0-6 to 0-5 in front at the halftime break.

Cloone enjoyed the better of the exchanges in the opening five minutes of the second half and got back on level terms thanks to Conor Keegan but Glenfarne Kilty reacted decisively to take a grip on the game thanks to points from Gilgunn (free) and Fergal Clancy.

An Eoin Keegan free three minutes later cut the gap but again Glenfarne Kilty upped their game with sub Darren Murray and Diarmuid Clancy adding a point apiece. Cloone kept in touch with a point from sub Sean Bohan as the south Leitrim side started to dominate proceedings.

With Glenfarne Kilty failing to score for 12 minutes, a 57th minute goal from sub Darren Keegan got Cloone level but a late Glenfarne Kilty drive saw them win 15 metre free which Fergal Clancy tapped over to put his side into the final.
