ALERT: Leitrim won't escape wet weather predicted this week

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Gerry Murphy said this will be a prolonged spell of rain over a 36-hour period and there will be persistent rain through today, tonight and into tomorrow.

Wet weather ahead

Leitrim won't escape the rain this week with Met Éireann senior forecaster Gerry Murphy saying that today's rainfall has now spread to all parts of the country, but is heaviest in the east.

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Mr Murphy said this will be a prolonged spell of rain over a 36-hour period and there will be persistent rain through today, tonight and into tomorrow.

He said weather stations in Meath and Louth have recorded the most rainfall so far but he expects Wexford and Wicklow to be the areas that are worst affected.

Flooding is feared across two major river valleys over the next 24 hours.

Orange weather alerts have been extended for Louth, Dublin and Wicklow and Dublin schools have closed early amid orange rain warning. 
January was second-wettest ever in Dublin, Met Éireann climate research revealed.
