Cold weather ahead

Met Éireann has warned that very cold weather is on the way, with temperatures dropping as low as -4C this week, threatening to freeze already-saturated surfaces after days of rainfall.

People are being warned of severe frost, icy conditions, hazardous travel conditions and travel disruption.

Temperatures are set to drop to -2C in Leitrim, early on Saturday morning.

The warning will come into effect at 9pm on Friday evening and remain in place until 10am on Saturday morning.

Met Éireann meteorologist Andrew Doran-Sherlock said: "A lot of places just haven't had the chance to dry out, and we've got wet surfaces, freezing temperatures. There's going to be icy stretches, so particularly tomorrow night and into Saturday morning, it could lead to some very hazardous conditions for roads and underfoot."
