€2 million water main replacement works to begin next week in Leitrim

Essential water main replacement works are scheduled to commence in Leitrim next week, aiming to provide homes and businesses with a more reliable and sustainable water supply while addressing the issue of frequent bursts.

The works in Fenagh form part of the National Leakage Reduction Programme, with almost 3km of ageing and damaged water mains set to be replaced with new, modern piping.

The €2.1 million project will be carried out along the R202 between Ardrum and Fenagh. Traffic lights will be in operation for the duration of the works to ensure the safety of both road users and work crews.

“We are delighted to be delivering this important investment for the communities of Fenagh and Ardrum. Customers in this area have experienced frequent bursts, and replacing this section of water main is essential to protecting their water supply,” said Patricia Lowry, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann.

“We understand that works of this nature can be inconvenient, and our crews will work as efficiently as possible to minimise any disruption. We would like to thank the community in advance for their patience and cooperation as we complete this vital upgrade,” she added.

The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Farrans Construction, with completion anticipated by Autumn 2026.

Customers will receive a minimum of 48 hours’ notice in advance of any planned outage while the upgrades are underway.

Uisce Éireann have stated that their long-term goal is to reduce leakage to 20 percent and that more than €1 billion will be invested in the network up to the end of 2029, including measures aimed at reducing leakage. This investment will support upgrades to the underground water network.

The Uisce Éireann Customer Contact Centre, open 24/7 on freephone 1800 278 278, is available to respond to any queries. Further information is available on water.ie.
