Dmitri Traciuc Igor, a former volunteer from Moldova with the Enniskillen-based not-for-profit UISCE, will run a marathon to raise awareness for UISCE’s peace programme.
The ‘Run for Peace’ takes place on Sunday, September 17, at 1pm in Enniskillen and ends in Manorhamilton at 4.30-5pm.
The route will cross three different counties Fermanagh, Cavan and Leitrim, the Leitrim, the Ireland-Northern / Ireland border, and the EU / UK frontier.
For the runner Dmitri, the marathon “is not just a challenge, it’s beyond that. It’s about creating a bridge between two nations”.
The marathon is the inaugural event in a series of peace programmes that UISCE will be launching in the coming months.
Some of these programmes will focus on educating “Peace Champions” along the Sligo to Enniskillen corridor to engage the younger generation in peacebuilding, as well as international programmes, for example, connecting Russian, Moldovan and Ukrainian community leaders.
As a non-profit organisation, UISCE depends on donations and support of its international volunteers and is invested in giving back to the community.
