New HSE residential home in Leitrim set to open at start of next year

HSE confirms provider and staffing for new Fenagh residential home, while construction continues on a new respite facility in Carrick-on-Shannon.
Positive news has been issued by the HSE, with a new residential home for adults with intellectual disabilities set to open in South Leitrim at the start of next year.
At July’s meeting of Leitrim County Council, Cllr Gary Prior called for an update from Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and HSE CEO Anne O’Connor on the anticipated opening date and staffing arrangements for the new residential care home in Mahana, Fenagh, as well as the new respite home currently under construction at Autumn View, Carrick-on-Shannon.
The HSE has confirmed that a provider has been identified to operate the service in Fenagh. The facility will be staffed by one full-time person in charge, four staff nurses and eight care assistants.
Meanwhile, the Autumn View facility in Carrick-on-Shannon is still under construction behind St Patrick’s Campus, and it is anticipated that the facility will be handed over to the HSE in Quarter 2 next year.
Ahead of its opening, a procurement process will be undertaken to identify the provider that will operate the respite service in Carrick-on-Shannon.
Once operational, the current adult respite provision for South Leitrim-based adults, which is currently delivered at Curlew Gardens in Boyle, will transfer to the new purpose-built facility in Carrick-on-Shannon.
“Fenagh is positive and it’s moving along and progressing well. Construction work is coming on in Carrick-on-Shannon. It’s really good news and it’s great for the families that have advocated for this for years,” said Cllr Gary Prior.
Furthermore, the HSE has plans to further expand disability services in Leitrim. This includes plans for a respite service for children with intellectual disabilities, with the potential for a service to commence at an interim location in 2028 while a long-term location is secured.
The HSE also says it is progressing proposals for additional residential services across Leitrim and has assessed a number of HSE-owned properties with development potential.
It also hopes to develop disability service provision at a council-owned property on Park Road, Manorhamilton, from 2028 onwards and will continue to collaborate with Leitrim County Council on this.
